Homemade Beauty Products: How to Make Your Own Aromatic and Deodorizing Body Powder.

This week we will focus on what to use instead of talc, which is a dangerous ingredient to use on your body (it can be irritating to the lungs and often times it has traces of arsenic in it), and a recipe on making your own “Lavender Body Powder”.

Talc is an inexpensive ingredient used in many body powders. Growing up I do remember using powders on baby’s bottoms and on my own body as well. The powder had a perfumed smell. Little did I know what I know now and it’s been many years since I have used a powder on my body. You may or may not use powder but it is an option to keep in mind. Sometimes you may want to use a bit to help keep the skin dry under your arms (and it helps with odor too), or you may like the softness it provides after a shower. As always, I always strive to achieve a natural approach in my beauty products, and it’s cheaper to make my own than to buy from a store.

Other excellent base powder choices to use alone or in combination in place of talc include:

  • arrowroot powder
  • baking soda
  • chickpea flour
  • corn flour
  • cornstarch
  • French green clay, finely ground
  • oat flour
  • powdered calendula blossoms
  • powdered chamomile flowers
  • powdered lavender buds
  • powdered neem herb
  • powdered rose petals
  • rice flour
  • white clay, finely ground

Of course there are no set rules and you can play around with these substituting and experimenting as you like.

Body Powder Gift Idea:

Herbal body powders make great gifts at Christmas or birthdays, Mother’s day, whenever. You can make one of the recipes that I’ll be sharing with you for the next month and just divide that recipe into three or four portions. You can find a decorative tin or jar (from home or from a craft’s store or wherever–maybe even a vintage jar of some kind, whatever your heart’s desire). You can even make your own container from cardboard or wood, paint it or stencil it, and add the powder to it as a gift. Make sure the container can hold 3/4 cup to 1 cup of powder. Don’t fill it up all the way….say about 2/3rds of the container so it won’t get all over anyone when they go to open it up. You can place a satin back puff or small, fuzzy fluff brush inside and top the container with a bow and personalized label.

LAVENDER POWDER RECIPE:

This recipe makes a light, lovely, old-fashioned, floral-scented body powder. It’s especially wonderful to use on baby girls; it leaves behind a sweet, delicate, feminine aroma.

1 cup arrowroot

1 cup cornstarch

1 cup white clay

1/2 cup lavender buds, finely powdered

1/2 cup rose petals, finely powdered

200 drops of lavender or geranium essential oil

RECOMMENDED FOR: all skin types

USE: as desired

PREP TIME: approximately 20 minutes, plus 3 days for fragrance to synergize

BLENDING TOOLS: large bowl and whisk or food processor, mortar and pestle

STORE IN: zip-seal plastic bag, wooden or cardboard box, tin, plastic or glass jar, or shaker container

YIELD: approximately 4 cups

Combine all ingredients except the essential oil in a large bowl or food processor. Stir slowly with a whisk or whirl in the food processor for 15 seconds until well blended. Using a mortar and pestle, combine the essential oil drop by drop with 6 or 7 tablespoons of the powder mix until the oil is absorbed. Add this oil mixture to the remaining powder and whisk the mixture slowly (to avoid making too much dust) or shake vigorously in a large container with a tight-fitting lid. If using a food processor, whirl for 15 seconds to blend.

Store the powder in an airtight storage container in a cool, dark place for 3 days to allow the scent of the essential oil and the flowers to permeate the mixture. Package the powder in smaller containers if desired.

No refrigeration is required, but for maximum fragrance and freshness, please use within one year.

APPLICATION TIPS: Apply as you would any body powder–by sprinkling or “puffing” over entire body or only certain areas.

Happy Powder Puffing! LOL!

Scrubbing the feet can feel exhilarating when they ache, especially when you are using an all natural product that leaves your feet smelling wonderful and feeling soft as you relax the rest of the evening reading a book or taking a break. Even if you can’t take a break afterwards, your feet feel so good, you almost feel energized again!

1/4 cup cornmeal

1/4 cup ground oatmeal

1 tablespoon sea or table salt

Purified or tap water

A few drops of lemon or peppermint essential oil

RECOMMENDED FOR: rough, dry, calloused feet

USE: daily or as needed

FOLLOW WITH: moisturizer

PREP TIME: approximately 5 minutes (if oatmeal is ground ahead of time)

BLENDING TOOLS: spoon and small bowl

STORE IN: do not store; mix as needed

YIELD: 1 treatment

Combine dry ingredients in a small bowl with enough water to form a creamy, gritty paste. Add a few drops of the essential oil and stir again.

APPLICATION TIPS: Sit on the edge of the bathtub or on a bench in the shower and massage your feet with this mixture—really scrub all those rough areas and between toes. Rinse and dry thoroughly and follow with an application of a thick moisturizing cream combined with a few drops of either essential oil.

Beauty Recipe: Natural Breath Fresheners!

Tuesday, May 24th, 2011

Natural Breath Fresheners: bottled water, apples, fennel seeds, parsley, chlorophyll drops, essential oils. See below for more details.

Here are some tips to having fresh breath when you are out and about, having lunch with a friend, or maybe dinner at someone’s house, or whatever:

Swish bottled water in your mouth for ten seconds and swallow. This helps loosen any food debris and moistens your mouth. A moist mouth harbors less odor-causing bacteria than a dry, pasty mouth.

Always carry a small, crisp apple within easy reach. After lunch, before a meeting, or whenever you feel the need for a bit of breath cleansing, take a few bites and chew very, very well. This naturally fibrous, juicy, sweet fruit whisks away odor and leaves your mouth feeling wonderfully fresh.

Chew on a few fennel seeds. They’ll leave your breath smelling of fresh licorice. Fennel seeds also relieve gas and upset stomach—two notorious producers of offensive breath.

After a garlic or onion-laden lunch or dinner out, always make sure to eat that sprig of parsley or watercress sitting on your plate. It’s not just a pretty garnish; it really helps eliminate unpleasant lingering food odors and improves digestion.

Keep handy a small bottle of commercial chlorophyll drops. Chlorophyll is the green pigment found in plants that acts as a natural breath sweetener and digestive aid.

Buy a small bottle of peppermint, spearmint, or sweet orange essential oil and keep it handy. Apply just one drop to your tongue when your mouth is in need of freshening.

Do you have any tips or tricks  you’d like to share for a natural breath freshener? Leave a comment below if you have one!

I hope you have an awesome day!

Beauty Recipe: Deep Pore Cleanser!

Thursday, May 12th, 2011

Beauty Recipe for Skin: Deep Pore Cleanser-Slight Astringent and Bleaching Action. Doubles as a Facial Scrub.

RECOMMENDED FOR: oily, combination, normal, or oily mature skin

USE: 1 to 2 times per week

FOLLOW WITH: moisturizer

PREP TIME: 10-15 minutes (if meals are ground ahead of time)

BLENDING TOOLS: blender, small bowl and spoon

STORE IN: do not store; mix as needed

YIELD: 1 treatment

Ingredients:

1/4 medium-sized ripe, peeled, seeded, chopped tomato or 2-inch chunk of cucumber, peeled, seeded, and chopped

Water

1 teaspoon almond meal

1 teaspoon ground oatmeal

1 teaspoon sunflower seed meal

1/4 teaspoon favorite base oil, such as almond, apricot kernel, hazelnut, jojoba, or extra-virgin olive

Place tomato or cucumber in a blender and add a small amount of water (one tablespoon at most). Blend until smooth.

Strain this vegetable liquid and, in a small bowl, combine enough of the liquid with the meals and base oil to form a smooth, spreadable paste.

APPLICATION TIPS: using your fingers, spread paste onto the face and neck as thickly as possible and allow it to remain on skin for 20 minutes. Even if the mask isn’t dry after this time, rinse skin.

Enjoy this recipe which is far better than using a commercial product that has tons of unwanted chemicals in it. Not only does it save you money, but the ingredients are all natural and from your fridge or cupboard, or easy to shop for, if you don’t have the ingredients on you. Natural is always better for your skin and as the old saying goes, “anything you put on your skin, you should be able to eat it also.” Who wants toxins in their body? Your skin is a detoxification organ. Anything you put on your skin goes into your body and to your blood stream. Have an awesome day and let me know if you get to try this recipe by leaving a comment below.

Beauty Recipe: Homemade Tasty Herbal Toothpicks!

Thursday, May 5th, 2011

Beauty Recipe: HoToothpicksw to make your own flavored tooth picks the natural way to keep your teeth free of debris!

Flavored toothpicks are found in health food stores and sometimes in restaurants, but why not make your own? You can use them to keep your teeth clean after a meal and it also freshens  your breath as well. This is a very simple recipe–my kind of recipe!

You’ll need a half or full box of toothpicks (depending on how much you want) of any style you want (round or flat) of a wood toothpick, a small lidded glass jar and enough of your favorite edible essential oil (sweet orange, fennel, anise, peppermint, spearmint, clove, cinnamon bark, tea tree, or tangerine) to cover the toothpicks.

Place the toothpicks either vertically or horizontally in the glass jar, pour in enough essential oil to completely cover them, tighten the lid, and allow them to absorb the essential oil for a couple days. Next, remove the toothpicks with tweezers and lay them on a plate covered with several layers of paper towels so they can dry for an hour or so. Store them in an airtight glass jar or tin. The leftover essential oil can be used for other beauty recipes.

Happy Tooth Picking!!! And don’t stab yourself while using them!

Beauty Recipe: Lavender and Almond Skin Cleanser!

Friday, April 22nd, 2011

Lavender and Almond Skin Cleanser (this is a good recipe for oily skin):

2 tablespoons beeswax granules

1 tablespoon almond oil (health foods store, Mountain Rose Herbs, Living Tree Community Foods, and other online sources).

1 tablespoon mineral water (grocery stores)

1 drop lavender essential oil

Melt the beeswax granules and almond oil together very gently. Take them off the heat and add the other two ingredients, whisking them all together rapidly. Once it has turned into a cream, put into a sterilized and dried pot (a glass container with a lid–I reuse the same container over and over again). Gently apply to your face with a washcloth or cotton cleansing pad. Remove with any gentle toner or water.

Caring for Your Teeth Naturally: More Toothpastes, Foods That Clean Teeth, Mouthwashes, More.

Last week I shared an awesome video on how to make your own tooth powder (or toothpaste, however you want to call it) as an alternative for the toothpastes you buy in the store. It uses all natural and organic ingredients and that’s what this blog is all about. We can naturally take care of our skin, hair, nails and more just from using ingredients in our cupboards or refrigerators. Not only will these recipes save you money, but they are natural too. Let’s start with two more recipes for a natural toothpaste.

Strawberry Toothpaste

Strawberries have gentle cleansing and bleaching properties, and help remove stains from the teeth (especially coffee and tea). Just crush strawberry and rub the pulp directly on teeth.

Hydrogen Peroxide Toothpaste

Mix 1/2 tsp of hydrogen peroxide with 1 teaspoon baking soda. Use this tooth-whitening mixture once a week. This formula is a strong stain remover and tartar reducer. If your teeth are really sensitive, do not use this recipe.

FOODS THAT CLEAN THE TEETH:

There are foods that stain the teeth such as coffee, tea, red wine, etc., and there are other foods that work on the teeth like detergents. Foods that require a lot of chewing like apples, celery, and carrots whiten teeth naturally.

Foods like spinach, lettuce, and broccoli prevent staining by creating a film on the teeth that acts as a barrier.

BRUSH YOUR TONGUE

Make sure to brush your tongue after brushing your teeth, as your tongue harbors germs and bacteria there. Just brush your tongue with a natural toothpaste as described above and save yourself the money of those overpriced tongue scrapers.

HOMEMADE MOUTHWASHES:

Tea

Boil a strong cup of peppermint or spearmint tea. Drink in a slow, deliberate manner while rolling the tea around in your mouth, or let cool and use as a regular rinse.

Clove Rinse

Heat one teaspoon of cloves with 1/4 cup of water. Cool and rinse.

Now let’s have some fun with our teeth the natural way! Your teeth enamel will thank you!

Beauty Recipe: How to Make Your Own Herbal Toothpaste!

Friday, April 8th, 2011

Beauty Recipe: How to Make Your Own Herbal Toothpaste (or rather your own tooth powder!)—using all natural ingredients!

With permission granted by Mountain Rose Herbs, I am very excited to present to you a video on how to make your very own teeth cleaner! With just a few ingredients you can clean your teeth without having to buy expensive toothpastes in the store. The ingredients that you will be using can be used for other beauty recipes and they store for a very long time, so no worries on the ingredients going bad quick.  Also these ingredients are all natural and organic, and there are no petro- chemicals or any bad substances in this tooth powder.

Many teeth cleaners (toothpaste) and including the so called natural toothpastes that you buy in the market are filled with harmful ingredients. Some of these ingredients include Sodium Lauryl Sulfate (same ingredient used in garage floor cleaners!–isn’t that gross?), artificial sweeteners (such as saccharin), preservatives, colors or flavors, amongst other dangerous substances which I will not list as that is meant for another post.  All you have to do is to look at the ingredient list on the toothpaste and you’ll see a whole list of bad stuff. Doing a bit of homework on what is in your beauty products, you’ll quickly find out that a lot of beauty products are loaded with cancer causing bad stuff!

Enough of the “bad” stuff! Let’s get to the “good” stuff! An instruction video on how to make your own teeth cleaner! Mountain Rose Herbs carries all the ingredients you need for this recipe, OR you can go on a hunt for these items, but to save time and energy I will using Mountain Rose Herbs. I trust what they stand for (being all organic and from quality sources, etc.).

Just in case you are not able to see the video I have written down the ingredients and instructions below:
Ingredients:

1/4 cup White Kaolin Cosmetic Clay

1/4 cup Baking Soda

1/4 cup Dead Sea Salt (or other good quality sea salt)

1 tablespoon dried organic Sage (off of your spice rack is fine too).

30 drops Spearmint Essential Oil

Small storage jar with lid

Instructions:

Mix the white kaolin clay, baking soda, and sea salt together in a bowl (you can use your clean hands for this). Grind sage down to a fine powder using a mortar and pestle  or you can try using a coffee grinder. Add sage to the mix and then add 30 drops of the spearmint essential oil mixing together well. Pour into your clean storage jar.

Just shake a small amount of this powder into one of your hands, wet your toothbrush and pick up the powder in your hand with the toothbrush.

Have fun with your teeth!!
