Ann Lihl’s Art: The Hidden Meanings of Art and How They Just Happen–My New Design “Rebirth”!

An 8 inch glass vase painted a tree scene and titled “Rebirth”:

In 2010, a licensed massage therapist friend from Facebook wanted something painted for her office so her customers could see something pretty. I remembered drawing trees with no leaves when I was a kid, and I loved drawing them! So, I decided to paint those same trees on her vase! Well, as a result, other friends wanted those trees painted on similar objects. I called her vase “Trees at Dusk” because it reminded me of how trees look at that time of day……peaceful if you ask me.

I knew if I came up with a design meaning behind each new tree design, it would become more personal and have a spiritual meaning attached to it.  It also gave ME a sense of  meaning as well. Sometimes I know ahead of time what the art piece means to me and sometimes I’m just experimenting and just feeling for it. Often times I paint something not knowing why I did and then later the light goes on in my head!

This particular design “REBIRTH”  is one of my “the lights came on in my head” moments.

When another friend on Facebook saw my friend’s vase, she wanted one of her own. She gave me free reign as to what I could put on this special order vase with the knowledge of knowing that her home decor was black and white. I had to really think of what I should  paint on the vase and I wracked my brain for some time before it dawned on me that she REALLY liked the tree scenes. So, I made up my mind to paint a tree scene that was original and different. When I finished painting it, I didn’t know if I liked it.

The next day, after leaving the vase over night, and to clear my mind of all judgments and thoughts, I came back to the vase, took the vase and put it in another room and looked at it from afar. It gave me a different perspective and WHAM!! I knew the meaning of the new design and I named it just like that! After I knew what it meant, then I loved it!

I named this design “REBIRTH” because it reminds me of what happens in nature when there is a fire in a forest. Forest fires are looked upon as “evil and destructive”, but in reality nature often needs fires to grow, to “rebirth” a whole new life (like the “circle of life”). There are plants who cannot grow without the use of fire. The fire opens up the core of the seed to sprout and create new life, and in order to reproduce they need that fire or else they face endangerment and extinction. Because I had painted the trees black to match my friend’s decor and then I painted white clouds to also match the decor, I knew I needed some color…..so I just went with the flow and added some orange, yellow, silver and blue. Well, little did I think that I was painting what would happen in nature when fire happens as to me it looked like a fire in the distance on the vase…..the rest you can imagine!

Art can mean different things to people. This is just MY perspective, but it can certainly be whatever you want it to be. I have often found that how I view things is not necessarily how others view it. Other people’s views often enlighten me and gives me a whole new meaning of what anything can be.

What does this design mean to you? Do you see anything different? Check out the photos below and let me know what you think! I welcome new ideas any time!

Ann Lihl’s Featured Art: Trees at Dusk Vase!

Monday, April 5th, 2010

I found this awesome looking vase– I just couldn’t decide how to design or what I should do, sell it or keep it. It sat in my closet for probably a couple of years.

A special Facebook friend told me one day that she wanted a special something to put in her office where she massages her patients in her new office. She is a licensed massage therapist. I was so touched that she would want a “piece of me” (her words) in her office.

She didn’t know what she wanted. She said to surprise her! I love being able to be creative and surprising people, but the risk to that is, will she like it when I’m done? So, I took my time in considering what I wanted to paint her. I couldn’t quite find what I wanted to paint on, but that special vase kept calling my name…..ok, ok…..I listened. She had sent me one picture of the corner of her office so I could get an idea of her decor and on what piece of furniture (a corner shelf) it would be on (keeping dimensions and price  in mind). See photo below.

This is definitely a one of a kind piece as I have no other vase like it! If you have a special vase that you’d like painted, send me an email at: simplythebestcreations@yahoo.com. Allow me to surprise you!!
