Ann Lihl’s Art: Spring Trees Glass Heart Jewelry Boxes!

Wednesday, March 30th, 2011

Hand painted Glass Heart Jewelry (or Trinket box) painted with spring trees:

I just finished painting some spring trees on glass heart boxes! One of these boxes has ONE big tree and then three small trees on the bottom piece, and then the other box has just three spring trees on the top piece with just blue on the bottom piece.

I really love the combination of the blues and greens. Matter of fact I have my kitchen these same colors and I love it! It is the color of nature, but more importantly I have it that way because I love these colors in general! The color of green is so healthy and earthy and full of life, while the color of blue is calming and relaxing and is the perfect background.

These boxes can be used for anything your heart desires. They make great gifts for other people and also for yourself. You can use it to store jewelry in, or maybe your hair pins or cotton swabs, or maybe that watch that you want to protect from getting scratched or lost.

Which one is your favorite? Leave me a comment below. I would love to have feedback.

Hand Painted Glass Maple Syrup Bottle Turned Into Home Decor!

This glass maple syrup bottle is just too pretty to throw away or even to put into the recycle bin, so I painted and added decorative sand inside of it.

I filled it with two different colors of decorative sand, then I stuffed a cotton ball inside of it to pack it tight so the sand won’t move (you can’t see the cotton ball). I put a cute matching ribbon bow on top of the bottle and then painted a spring tree on it! See the leaf buds? I love this so much I’m tempted to keep it, but I’m gonna paint another one for my home instead! I’ll show it to you when I finish!

I actually bought the maple syrup for me to eat and have collected quite a few of these sweet bottles over the last year or two (can’t remember when I started).

What do you think? Is it cute? I’ve never seen anything like it before and I love it! This would look great in a kitchen! I personally love the colors too!

I will be posting more of these bottles as I finish them!

Ann Lihl’s Art: Something I Painted For Myself!

Monday, January 31st, 2011

A hand painted two piece glass container that can be used as a cotton ball or cotton swab  holder.

I often reward myself by painting something special for my home. Something that I need and can use. I’ve had this particular container for a few years now, but it was just a plain see through glass container. I decided to paint one of my tree scenes on it so that I would have something of my own with trees. I decided to sell the mug I painted for myself and keep this container instead because I have so many mugs I can already use. I use this container as my cotton swab holder. Not only do I use it all the time, but it’s beautiful and sits on my dresser and man does it look pretty!!!

Check it out!

Ann Lihl’s Art: A Conure Birdie Trinket Box!

Friday, January 28th, 2011

Special order: a hand painted wood trinket box for a birdie lover and her Conure named “GOLDIE”.

A twitter friend from an online twitter birdie group wanted a trinket box with her pet Conure bird “Goldie” to be painted on it. Since I love birds and have two of my own, she and I made quick friends! She has a website for anyone interested in Conures. She has videos of her “Goldie” doing different activities such as dancing and talking and she has lots of information on how to handle a Conure in general.  Here is her website: http://myconure.com/

Here is her trinket box that she ordered from me. I hope she likes it as much as I do! Now I feel like I should paint my birds on a trinket box too!!

These pictures are kind of dark. In real life the box is very vibrant in color and very beautiful. It’s also sealed with a thick gloss to protect the box! It’s very gorgeous in person more so than online! Tell me what you think!

Ann Lihl’s Art: The Hidden Meanings of Art and How They Just Happen–My New Design “Rebirth”!

Monday, January 24th, 2011

An 8 inch glass vase painted a tree scene and titled “Rebirth”:

In 2010, a licensed massage therapist friend from Facebook wanted something painted for her office so her customers could see something pretty. I remembered drawing trees with no leaves when I was a kid, and I loved drawing them! So, I decided to paint those same trees on her vase! Well, as a result, other friends wanted those trees painted on similar objects. I called her vase “Trees at Dusk” because it reminded me of how trees look at that time of day……peaceful if you ask me.

I knew if I came up with a design meaning behind each new tree design, it would become more personal and have a spiritual meaning attached to it.  It also gave ME a sense of  meaning as well. Sometimes I know ahead of time what the art piece means to me and sometimes I’m just experimenting and just feeling for it. Often times I paint something not knowing why I did and then later the light goes on in my head!

This particular design “REBIRTH”  is one of my “the lights came on in my head” moments.

When another friend on Facebook saw my friend’s vase, she wanted one of her own. She gave me free reign as to what I could put on this special order vase with the knowledge of knowing that her home decor was black and white. I had to really think of what I should  paint on the vase and I wracked my brain for some time before it dawned on me that she REALLY liked the tree scenes. So, I made up my mind to paint a tree scene that was original and different. When I finished painting it, I didn’t know if I liked it.

The next day, after leaving the vase over night, and to clear my mind of all judgments and thoughts, I came back to the vase, took the vase and put it in another room and looked at it from afar. It gave me a different perspective and WHAM!! I knew the meaning of the new design and I named it just like that! After I knew what it meant, then I loved it!

I named this design “REBIRTH” because it reminds me of what happens in nature when there is a fire in a forest. Forest fires are looked upon as “evil and destructive”, but in reality nature often needs fires to grow, to “rebirth” a whole new life (like the “circle of life”). There are plants who cannot grow without the use of fire. The fire opens up the core of the seed to sprout and create new life, and in order to reproduce they need that fire or else they face endangerment and extinction. Because I had painted the trees black to match my friend’s decor and then I painted white clouds to also match the decor, I knew I needed some color…..so I just went with the flow and added some orange, yellow, silver and blue. Well, little did I think that I was painting what would happen in nature when fire happens as to me it looked like a fire in the distance on the vase…..the rest you can imagine!

Art can mean different things to people. This is just MY perspective, but it can certainly be whatever you want it to be. I have often found that how I view things is not necessarily how others view it. Other people’s views often enlighten me and gives me a whole new meaning of what anything can be.

What does this design mean to you? Do you see anything different? Check out the photos below and let me know what you think! I welcome new ideas any time!

Ann Lihl’s Art: A Special Order For a Tree Picture Collector!

Friday, January 21st, 2011

My first special order of the year: An 8 x 8 inch canvas painting— the “Trees At Dusk” design.

An awesome Facebook friend really likes my tree designs. She collects tree pictures from different artists. I felt honored to do one of my favorites for her. This is also my first painted tree design (although I have to admit this isn’t my first time in attempting trees—I used to love drawing trees as a kid)!

This is also my first time in painting an actual canvas picture, besides a floor cloth I painted with a similar material (like canvas but more stretchy and it’s not backed by wood).

I found it a challenge in blending the background colors as I am not used to painting on something so porous (besides wood), and that sucks up a lot of paint. I also am not a canvas painter! I thought in my head that I wasn’t blending it right….that is, until I walked away from it for over 12 hrs. When I came back to it I then saw that it was perfect just the way it was and that all the work I put into the background had paid off and that sometimes  you just have to step away from your work (in whatever it is you do) to get a “fresh” look….it’s like seeing something for the first time…it’s hard to describe, but if you are an artist or even a writer you know exactly what I am talking about.

Just a note: I do not normally paint on canvas. This blog post is just to show you something I completed and that I am proud of. My friend bought the canvas and sent it to me through the mail. Due to limited storage and other product that I have already in mind to paint and other various reasons, I probably will not be painting any other canvases (at least not now–NEVER SAY NEVER). The reason why I decided to paint this particular canvas is because I was allowed to do whatever I wanted with no limitations. In other words, I was allowed to paint my trees that I love, a color scheme I wanted, with no restrictions. Also because it was a small canvas and not a big one.

As someone who loves to create things, sometimes I have a hard time accepting certain special orders. Although 95% of the time I have fulfilled other people’s wishes, I often struggle with the concept of being trapped into only doing what someone else wants, whether it be a color scheme or someone’s pet or whatever it is they want me to do. I have to determine each order to see if it suits me. If I don’t feel compelled or inspired about what others want then I cannot paint from my heart and soul. I think I really shine with my work when I create something that moves me in some way……

On the other hand, I’ve had several friends inspire me with their ideas. Sending me pictures always gives something fresh to work with…..especially if I really like it as well and I know it will be popular with others. Sometimes one idea turns into another idea and something wonderful is created. With that said, check out the pictures of the canvas below: (YOU CAN CLICK ON THE PHOTOS TO ENLARGE THEM!)

Whatever You CHOOSE to do, Do it WELL (a rock at the beach in Lincoln City, Oregon)-2010

Whatever You CHOOSE to do, Do it WELL (a rock at the beach in Lincoln City, Oregon)-2010

Hi Everyone!

I didn’t think I would take so long to get back to blogging, but I needed the time off to do some organizing and thinking. I took a two week vacation to Oregon to see family during the holidays and when I came back I felt the need to organize my apartment and to get rid of unneeded things. I also felt the need to just take it easy.

I am in the process of figuring out what kind of neat things I’d like to blog about this year, and I am also thinking about what kind of artsy things to paint and create. I love variety and so I always want to change with the times in bringing what’s best to all of us.

2010 was an awesome year for me! I launched my website and I sold stuff on ETSY for the first time ever! I also made more sales and created more things this year than any other year! I’ve been told that I have gotten better with my designs and detail and that was something I challenged myself to do—to raise the bar— bringing the very best to myself and to others. 2010 was also the year that I learned how to blog, how to maintain a website and the year that I officially became my own boss.

This year I’d like to increase the quality of my product by being more thematic, with new designs, and maybe even creating something I have never sold before. In other words, something not ornament related. I am still planning this as I write so I can’t tell you the details yet, but I always try to make it interesting and exciting by bringing something new to the table.

I still have no desire to do huge canvas paintings or to paint portraiture of humans or animals….ALTHOUGH— I do have a special order on painting a bird for someone!! We shall see how that goes. In general though, I want to stick to what I feel inspired to do and so that doesn’t mean I will always do as others want me to create. I welcome all ideas though…one idea often leads to another idea.

One of my blog plans is to feature a new artist on my blog every month! I love to buy and share other people’s work and I fully support handmade products as I think it’s important to support others and to stay true to ourselves by being creative and using that part of our brain to keep us healthy. For those of you who claim you don’t have a creative bone–don’t even go there! Everyone has something to bring to the table! Some are more gifted in a certain area, but we all are creative in some way, shape or form!! Even those of you who like to make homemade beauty products, prepare gourmet food or come up with a creative way to talk to others or being organized—THAT is a way of being creative. We are all creative and we all need to help and be there for each other. We get back so much more when we give! Believe me! I’ve seen and felt this happen so much, especially this last year!

I shall keep you posted on my future goals. I hope more than anything that I can help inspire others to be happy by being creative and supportive. I wish you all a blessed and productive 2011!! NEVER GIVE UP!!!
