Handmade Beauty Products: Oatmeal and Lavender Bath Bag!

For a homemade washcloth and bathtub bundle, here is a recipe that is so simple you could cry! (not literally, but you get my point).

In a muslin bag or square piece of cotton fabric, place the following in the bag:

1/2 cup old-fashioned rolled oats

3 drops Lavender Essential Oil

Tie the bag tightly shut with a piece of string or ribbon or twine.

Add this bath bundle into the bathtub as you fill it with warm water. You can use it as a washcloth once you sit yourself into the bathtub. Oatmeal softens the skin and the lavender is very relaxing and smells heavenly! Lavender is very relaxing so if you’re having a rough or stressful day, this would be a great relief for an evening at home before bed.

Beauty Recipe: Cleopatra’s Milk Bath!

Elizabeth Taylor in Cleopatra, 1963

Elizabeth Taylor in Cleopatra, 1963

In honor of Elizabeth Taylor, (may she rest in peace), I am posting this beauty recipe! I remember her most in the movie CLEOPATRA when I was a kid. I thought she was absolutely stunningly beautiful in it and did a fantastic job playing the part.

I don’t know if indeed the real Cleopatra actually had milk baths but what’s a little fantasy to hurt? Maybe she did or didn’t! Let’s just have some fun!

From what I have read, milk is very soothing to the skin, and if you do a search on Google you will see all kinds of variations on milk baths, in adding baking soda, essential oils, etc. Do as you wish, but for this simple recipe it’s just plain old powdered milk and that is it. The reason for the powdered milk is only because it won’t spoil if you leave a jar of it in your bathroom. You can certainly use regular milk in the fridge though should you have some. Personally I do not drink milk, but I wouldn’t mind trying the powdered milk in my bath.

Ingredients:

You just use 1 and a half cups of powdered milk or 2 pints of fresh milk.

While the bath is running add the powdered milk under the fast-running tap.

This will help you relax and soften the skin! Lie back and pretend to be Cleopatra!

Let’s Make Our Own Beauty Products: How to Make Bath Salts!

Thursday, July 22nd, 2010

I’d like to share another bath salt recipe from Mountain Rose Herbs. I like this particular recipe as it is a bit different in that they use three different kinds of salt and a clay that is very good for your skin. You can store it in a glass jar too, and so I am looking forward to making a big batch of this for future bath soaks.

Ingredients:

1 cup dead sea salt (this salt is harvested from the dead sea, is bitter, and contains concentrated minerals good for the skin, but not for eating)

1 cup course sea salt (grocery or health food store)

1 cup white kaolin cosmetic clay

1/2 cup epsom salt (drugstore or grocery store or Mountain Rose Herbs)

1/2 cup borax powder aka sodium borate (Mtn Rose Herbs’ brand has no surfactants or detergents in theirs, like the commercial brands do)

1/2 cup aluminum free baking soda (health food store) or Mountain Rose Herbs

1 teaspoon lavender essential oil (preferably organic)

Let’s Make Our Own Beauty Products: Ann’s Vanilla Bath Soak!

Thursday, March 18th, 2010

Yeah! Another cool beauty recipe to try out! Last week I shared the Lavender Scalp Treatment. What did you think? How did it feel? Feel free to leave a comment.

This week I want to share my own recipe (well, not really my recipe), but a tweaked recipe that I’ve been using for myself a couple of years ago! I decided to name it “Ann’s Vanilla Bath Soak”.

What you need:

A big container or jar that has a lid and will keep out moisture

Sea Salt

Baking Soda

Vanilla Essential Oil (or any essential oil if you don’t like or want vanilla)

(Vanilla Essential oil is very expensive–$20-25 for good quality oil)

Preparation:

I always make enough for two batches at a time (meaning for two baths), but feel free to make as many batches as you want (as long as it fits in your jar).

I use a glass jar, but feel free to use anything that has a lid and will keep the moisture out of it. Make sure you work with dry hands, dry spoons and dry containers when mixing. If you don’t, you’ll be using a sharp object to “dig” out the mixture into your bath (unless that is what you want to do!).

I fill half the container or jar with baking soda and the rest of the jar with sea salt, leaving a little bit of room at the top to be able to “shake” the ingredients together. Shake the container (up and down, rolling it around in your hands to mix the ingredients). DO NOT put the essential oil into the container.

Store the container away from the bathroom in a cupboard somewhere. If you leave it in the bathroom it may become damp and cause the mixture to harden inside the container.

When you are ready for your bath, pour approximately 1-2 cups into the bath. This really depends on how much you want. You’ll have to experiment  to see how this makes your skin feel. If you put the hot water on first after you pour in the dry ingredients it will help soften the ingredients quicker. You may have to stir it  a bit with your feet or arms to get it to move around a bit. As the water is still running, pour in three drops of Vanilla essential oil into the bathtub. You’ll smell the aroma, and if you’re like me, you’ll be in heaven!!

Feel free to substitute other oils instead of vanilla. Lavender is a relaxing oil, peppermint is an invigorating oil, eucalyptus oil will help with congestion and sinus issues, etc.

The very last step is to step into the tub (if you haven’t already done so!) and enjoy a luxuriating time for yourself. You won’t see any nice little bubbles in your bathtub but that’s ok. You’re only in the tub to relax and enjoy the moment without all those nasty chemical bubbles. When you step out of the tub, your skin will feel softer than before.

If you are allergic to essential oils or would rather not purchase any essential oils for this recipe, that is ok to do. Just make the mixture and do not add the oil to the tub.

An alternative: SALT BATH–run a warm bath and pour 1-2 cups sea salt under the tap-ENJOY!

A second alternative: LAVENDER BATH–Add 6-8 drops of lavender essential oil under the fast-running hot tap as you fill your bath!

So this week, give yourself something you deserve-some ME time! Let me know how you feel!!
